Giant bow sweater + festival blue + metro coat

Giant bow sweater (size small):  J.Crew, fall 2012
Wool No. 2 pencil skirt in festival blue (size 6):  J.Crew, fall 2012
Heels:  Jones New York (DSW)
I wore this sweater casually with jeans here and loved it.  Today I wanted to give it a try with a pencil skirt for work.  A simple sweater and skirt combo is really kicked up a knotch with the fun bow and leopard shoes, which are low enough to run around painlessly all day.  Sadly most people didn't see my cute bow sweater though, as most of my day was spent in my coat:

Double cloth metro coat with Thinsulate in vintage berry (size 6 Tall) :
J.Crew, limited sizes here
Wool plaid scarf in fuschia/green:  J.Crew, fall 2012

I was on the fence about this coat when I first purchased it, and now I can't believe I ever questioned it.  I love it!  The color, shape, length...love it all.  I do wish it had functional pockets though.  J.Crew, what's up with these useless flaps?  Fortunately I loved the coat enough to overlook this feature...but I know pockets or lack thereof can be a deal breaker for some girls.

  1. Are you sure the coat doesn't have functional pockets? Oftentimes, manufacturers sew these types of pockets (called welt pockets) shut. Once you purchase the coat you can carefully take out the stitches to access the pocket. Not sure if this is the case with this coat as I haven't seen the coat in real life. You'd have to carefully inspect underneath the flaps to see if there are hidden pockets.

  2. I purchased last year's version of this coat and had to use a seam ripper (or you could use small scissors) to carefully cut the little threads that hold the pocket closed. Manufacturers do this to protect it during shipping, I guess. It then becomes a functional pocket, although it is a little awkward since you can't easily slip your hand in there. I'd encourage you to take a look and see if they can't be used.

  3. The Authentic Red Metro coat that I purchased a few months ago does have functional pockets --- as the others have said, you just have to use a seam ripper.

At first, the flap over the pockets really bugged me because I couldn't easily stick my hands in when they got cold. However, I just stuck the flaps inside the pockets and it worked out much better for me. It didn't look weird or anything, either:)
