Hot pink Lucille + Green bubble necklace

Lucille dress in hot pink:  J.Crew, limited sizes and colors here
Bubble necklace in kelly green (and earrings):  J.Crew, here
Pumps:  Seychelles

This outfit was actually from last week and I never had the chance to post it.  That came in handy today, as I didn't have time for an outfit photo but Lord forbid I don't have an OOTD to share everyday! :)

This was an easy, breezy outfit, but a hot pink dress does receive quite a bit of attention and comments.    On the day I wore it, one of my customers quite loudly voiced his opinion that my dress was "too bright" and he didn't think my shoes matched.  Oooooookay.  Did I let it ruin my day?  Only for a minute or two while I texted all my friends and complained about his nerve.  Then I shook the bad vibe from my brightly-clad self and moved on with my day.  I understand that I dress more colorfully than most women in my conservative city.  But it is a very rare occassion that I receive a negative comment about an outfit.  I do admit my feelings were a bit hurt...especially since I felt fab in this outfit! :)

How do you handle less-than-kind comments?

  1. Jeannie,
I think you look gorgeous in that outfit. I also think your client was a liiiiitle out of line, really, how do you bring that up in a business conversation? And who is to say women can't stand out? I say go for it, and next time you meet with him, add a neon accent ;-)

    1. Thank you! :) I agree, it was way out of line, and got even worse when even his assistant chimed in and said "you should have worn tan shoes." SERIOUSLY!

  2. I have the Lucille in green and was very tempted to order the pink online, but I didn't :( You look so cute in it with the green bubble necklace! (I ordered the white one to go with my green dress.) When people question your outfit choices, all you have to do is realize that they "just don't get it"...but YOU do!! :)

  4. Wow, what a dick. Sorry, but that's so rude! I love your outfit :)

  5. Gah--so many typos in the original that I just redid it!

I think as long as you think you look great (and you obviously look gorgeous!), it's pretty easy to ignore people who are being jerks. "Haters gonna hate." Typically people who will criticize you out loud are trying to bring you down or make you feel bad, and that says more about them than it does about you.

That said, I totally would have had a rant-y G-Chat with my husband or a friend before I let it go.

Also, I love you in pink almost as much as I love you in green. And it's not like you're wearing neon...sure it is bright, but it's tasteful and completely work appropriate. How boring would it be if we all just wore navy blue pantsuits to work every day? A little color never hurt anybody.

  8. Ack! Messed up my other comment.

When somebody makes a comment like that, it's probably best to consider the source! If it would have come from a friend (who undoubtedly would have said it in a constructive way), I may have taken it to heart. But seriously: who does this guy (and his assistant) think he is? It's like the guys on the beach with big beer guts who judge women in bikinis. A mental slap to all of them!

And I totally agree with the other comments, the dress and shoes and necklace are very nice together, and look lovely on you.

  10. Hi friend, the Governor once told me he found my capri pants odd-"not short-not long". Well I didn't like his obviously dyed jet black hair shellacked into place with an overabundance of AquaNet so we were even but I was raised better than he-- two points for me for style and class!

  11. I'm so frustrated for you. He put you in a tough position because you probably can't really call him out as a client. Odds are he is upset because a woman like you would never go for him or something else that has no business being a factor, yet is a motivator for inane comments like that. It's complte bull, too, because he would not comment on a man's attire. Good of you to rise above. :)

    Keep dressing & being fab!

  12. I can't believe someone would criticize what you're wearing just out-of-the-blue like that! I have this dress in green and I've been debating buying it in pink on eBay so I was searching for reviews and came across your posts about the dress. Based on your other OOTD post, I'm going to pass because while I like brights, I don't want to stand out too much in the office. But I think this looks great on you! Although I hate to say it... I do kind of agree with him on the shoes haha. I think they are a little too fall/winter with this spring/summer look.
